Summer is always full of a wonderful time for enjoyment and outdoor fun but for older adults, it is very important to stay safe this summer because the summer can be dangerous for our seniors if we not take primary and necessary precautions. Here we are giving you some tips for older adults how they can beat the heat this summer.
Dehydration is one of the most common problems in older adults and it can also be caused by excessive sweating, diabetes and etc. older adults are less aware of the sense of thirsty so they don’t get enough hydrated. That’s why it is important for older adults to drink at least 8 glasses of water or any kind of energy drink and avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated fluids which makes you more dehydrating.
Wear light clothes
In summers seniors should wear light clothes with having bright colors, loose-fitting clothes. Choose breathable fabric, cotton, and other light fabrics that make you more comfortable. You can also wear a wide-brimmed hat that keeps the sun off from your neck and face.
Avoid going out in sun peak hours
In summers, older adults should plan their outdoor activities as the after 10 am sun rays become very harmful. So, it is good for older adults they should do outdoor activities before 10 am and after 5 pm.
Sunrays have both UVA and UVB rays that can affect the skin of older adults. Therefore it is good and essential for them to wear sunscreen of SPF 30 before 15-30 minutes going into sun exposure.
Watch for Heatstroke
Don’t take heatstroke foregranted because it is a life-threatening situation. Heatstroke has symptoms like high body temperature, nausea, dizziness, headache, confusion, etc. if you find any of these symptoms, ask for immediate help.
